Antoon Van den Braembussche
Antoon Van den Braembussche was born at Eeklo (Belgium) in 1946 . He studied philosophy and moral sciences at the Free University of Brussels.
From 1980 until 2007, he taught at Erasmus University Rotterdam, initially philosophy of history and later also and mostly philosophy of art. In the academic year 1997-1998 he was head of the theory department at the Jan van Eyck Academy (Maastricht). He currently teaches art criticism at the Free University of Brussels.
Van den Braembussche was a Visiting Professor at the University of Bielefeld, Calcutta University, Javdapour University, the University of Amsterdam, the Universities of Turku and Helsinki, Academia Vitae in Deventer, the Higher Institute of Fine Arts (HISK) in Antwerp and Ghent, Centre Erasme, the Antwerp School for Comparative Philosophy (SCFA), and Philosophy East and West (FOW, Utrecht).
In 2009, Thinking Art was published by Springer. This book is the English edition of his Dutch introduction to the philosophy of art, Denken over Kunst, which is widely considered a standard work in the field. In recent years, Van den Braembussche co-edited Intercultural Aesthetics (Springer, 2009) and co-authored, in Dutch, Baudelaire in Cyberspace: Dialogues on Art, Science and Digital Culture (ASP, 2008), with visual artist Angelo Vermeulen. He is currently preparing The Silenced Past. The nature and representation of historical taboos and traumas.
Van den Braembussche also published five poetry booklets in Dutch, and regularly performs his poetry on stage.
